As a kid's photographer here in Athens GA for the last 10 years, I've learned so much about the child's portrait business and how to take great action shots. A lot of my little girl clients were already dancers, so a transition into older girls and dance photography seemed inevitable. I'd already been practiced in action shots because kids are fast, but there is a whole new world of mistakes to make when photographing dancers.
Is the foot blurry? What about her fingers? You have to have the right shutter speed or flash to freeze that motion in that split second of time that movie is at it's peak. Is the lighting good? The location nice? What about safety for the dancer or gymnast involved? Then there are all the fun technical bits of dance photography to get right too. Are her toes pointed? Is that pointe foot curved? Is the knee bent in attitude or does it look sloppy? Is the knee nice and straight in arabesque? Timing is also incredible crucial. As I'm watching a jete through my camera, I have to know when to click the shutter to make sure the move is full and not still leading into it.
